I told Kristen I was going to run six. “Six?” She replied, a bit surprised. That’s all I needed to hear. Since beginning this 100 days of running challenge almost a month ago now, my intention has been clear: this is a test of will, nothing more. In fact, training in the method I am has almost nothing to do with physical ability. I said I was going to do six, so I ran six.

    I don’t stop when I’m tired. I stop when I’m done.

    – David Goggins

As I mentioned previously I’ve started to work on training my heart rate, rarely going above 140 today. This causes for slow miles. I know people who could probably walk a 12 minute mile, but it’s all apart of the plan. After I got done running my 10K today I felt like I could have run 6 more absolutely fine, I was barely winded. I monitored my heart rate and breathing pattern the whole time.

The goal, if all goes to plan. Is to go backwards before going forwards again. I’m going to continue to run at a 140 heart rate, experimenting occasionally with a 150 and see if I can condition myself to move faster without exerting more energy.

This is a test of will, but every day I get better at this I get nervous; my ego keeps trying to come out and play. This is about finishing the 100 days, first and foremost. I’ve also ordered some new shoes, my Brooks are on their last leg 😂.

I ran a single mile in about 10 minutes (evidenced by the yellow line in the image) but forgot to turn off my run app, so it counted the walk after.

    Nothing else to say today.

I’m rethinking my diet and training methods. I’ve been reading a lot of books on running and nutrition this year, especially on my runs. I’m going to try slowing down the pace a bit as I work to keep my heart rate lower and train my body that way. Eventually the goal will be to run a quicker pace at a lower heart rate, but I’m going to need to slow down first to do that.

I’ve also decided to stop eating meat. I’m not sure if I’m going to do this forever or if I’m also going to 86 animal products or not. At first, I was mostly interested in the health benefits of a plant based diet but I also don’t agree with how we factory farm animals and I’m pretty stoked on the reduction in resources a plant eater consumes vs a meat. I’m not sure if this is a permanent thing, but I’m intrigued to try it and learn more as I do.

Aside from that, there is nothing special about today. I walked 2 miles to give my knees and shins a rest.

We’re hosting friends this weekend and were out almost all day and night yesterday, only stopping back by the house briefly before midnight. We had just finished biking about 20 miles. Kristen had mentioned that the biking should count as the run. Nope.

I made the most of the time we stopped back at the house by knocking out a quick mile. I wanted to be a good host so I ran it as quickly as possible, and finished in 8 minutes and 20 seconds. My fastest time in years.

Today some friends ran with me. I told them I was slow and ran at about a 10 minute pace but we ended up running the first mile in 9:10 and the second in 8:30 for an incredible -40s split.

I’m pumped to say the least. A sub 9 minute pace at 250+ lbs seems incredible. I’m wondering if a sub 8 is possible.

I ran another 5K today. My weather app says it’s 65f outside but the sun was cooking. I’m very pleased with my overall time as well as my splits and individual miles. All three miles were under 10 minutes.

I’m glad I walked between the 5K two days ago and the 5K today. My extremities still hurt but far less so with some rest the day prior.

I’m going to sleep good tonight.

Nothing special about today. The image shows a run but it’s quite obviously a walk. I felt totally fine to run but thought it best to give my extremities (especially my knees) some active rest after my 5k yesterday.

Wondering what I should do on the next milestone. I think for day 50 a 10k might be right. Maybe I should just yolo swaggins it and go for 10 miles. The Austin marathon is towards the end of February… should I just run a half there?

My cardio feels great. I hope my knees make it 🤞🏼

We recently had a family emergency and I was also extremely sick during this time. I walked the miles a couple of days feeling like I was going to die. After I got better, I compensated by running four miles at a 10 min pace. Today, I decided to run a 5k on lunch since I’m officially 1/5th of the way through this challenge.

It’s still pretty tough to keep a 10 minute pace for more than two miles but I’m working on it. My cardio feels great but my knees and shins are getting raked over the coals. I’m wondering if I should start walking 2-3 miles once or twice a week.

Regardless, I’m at 44.23 miles so far, with only 80 days to go. I’ve really been enjoying the benefits of how it feels to knock this shit out every day even though I don’t want to do it.
